Believe it or not, there is a lot of quality hip-hop out there. De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. I know as a male in his mid 30's I'm almost in the same boat as you, but have faith, there is some actual intellegent hip hop to make even some of the old folks say 'Hmm'.

wally bangs

Yo boyee! Some hip hop is dope and some is wack! (Am I dating myself with the 80's here or what?) Here's the short list of hip hop artists I've enjoyed over the years.

First we have to send a shout out to Kool Herc who was rocking block parties in the early 70's with his portable sound system. While not a hip hop deejay, he nevertheless inspired countless kids to become deejays.

Here's the wally list in approximately chronological order:

Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five
Funky Four + 1
Sugarhill Gang - although prefab they still deserve some amount of props
Spoonie Gee
Kurtis Blow
Treacherous 3 featured Kool Moe Dee
Afrika Bambatta
LL Cool J
Beastie Boys
Whodini - the pop side of hip hop and they never get any dap
Eric B & Rakim
Schooly D
Public Enemy
Ice T - "6 in the morning, police at my door, fresh Adidas squeak across the bathroom floor"
Niggas With Attitude
De La Soul
Jungle Brothers - Native Tongues in the house!
A Tribe Called Quest
Digable Planets - just reunited
Stetsasonic - Prince Paul is a genius
Wu-Tang Clan
The Roots
Common - "I Used To Love Her" was the bomb!
Kool Keith
Jay-Z - for "99 Problems"
Talib Kweli
Mad Villain
Out Kast
Kanye West
Mos Def!!!

There's a lot of good tunes to found in that list, yet I do find most hip hop to be pure, misogynistic, gangster crapola. go figure.
