Saturday morning was the caucus. Ours was jam-packed, as were all the others I’ve heard reports about, either first-hand or through the news media. There were something like ten–twelve precincts all meeting in the same church cafeteria. Everybody was trying to talk at once, so it was incredibly loud in there. Our precinct committee officer (PCO, for short) didn’t show up, so we sort of did it all ourselves. It was kinda chaotic, but we got it all done.
The big news is that Science Girl was elected one of our precinct delegates for Dean. She was/is really jazzed about this, so I’m glad the other Dean voters in our precinct decided to recognize her capabilities. Rock on, Science Girl! Take the country back!
As near as I can figure out, her next step is to go to the legislative district caucus, at which point they will weed out some of the delegates. Should she make it past that, there’s the county and state conventions to get through before anybody is actually elected to the state delegation to the national convention in Boston.
Frankly, since neither of us is very well-connected, if you know what I mean, there’s not much chance she’ll get that far. From a pool of some 29,000 precinct delegates, the state sends 95 delegates - 17 of which are party higher-ups, considered “superdelegates” - and 13 alternates to the national convention. Not the best odds. Still, it’s not impossible. Besides, it’s pretty cool for her to be inside on this thing, as it’s something she’s been interested in for some time now. I made her promise to take notes as she goes along.
After the caucus & some lunch, it was off to the plant show. Way too many people were trying to look at too many plants at the same time. Still, there were a lot of cool display gardens (the promised Basset puppies were there) and many plants to purchase, if one so wished. SG said she could find most of the better ones for less elsewhere, so we made do with a hosta and some trillium.
Yesterday was all about research. SG was kind enough to give me the day to study, so I took full advantage.
Then we made tacos.
Kinda anticlimactic, ain’t it?
